The Problem

We all know that low energy light bulbs save us money and are good for the environment. So why don’t we see them everywhere? Why do we only buy them when government legislation forces us to?

It is not because the light quality is poor or the product is too expensive: these problems have been solved, though many do not realise it.

The problem is the product, not the technology. The product fails to realise the potential of the technology; there are CFLs out there that provide a nice colour of light and that turn on quickly, but they are hidden under a sea of

cheap, poor quality bulbs that are given away for free. Good quality naturally costs a bit more, but it is hard to spend the extra when the product is so unattractive.

What’s more, there are thousands of manufacturers but only three basic bulb formats are available: The Radiator, The Ice Cream Whip and the Tungsten-esque style. Each is uniform in shape and fails to generate interest, tension or beauty of form. It’s like inventing the car and then producing only three shapes.

How is it that the bulb - an object so synonymous with ideas – has been so entirely absent of imagination?

Our Approach.
At Hulger, we have taken the tubular form of the bulbs and begun to realise their true potential. Doing so changes our appreciation of the bulb; when design is central to the product, not just an afterthought, it becomes a sculptural object fit to grace public spaces, not something to hide away in storerooms and workshops.

The name ‘Plumen’ embodies our approach. A plume is a feather designed to attract, drawing attention to a bird’s beauty and prowess, the lumen the unit of light. Plumen is simply about a proud beauty of light. Through our designs we hope to highlight the potential of the low energy light bulb.
