LED v Incandescent
What’s the oldest tech you own? A vintage polaroid camera? An antique record player?  Probably not. Look around your house and take a look at your lightbulbs. If they’re incandescents (with wire tungsten filaments), they’re most likely the oldest tech you own – because they were invented in 1904.

Despite the fact they’re banned in many countries¹, incandescent bulbs (AKA squirrel cage, Edison style) are still EVERYWHERE. Thankfully different lighting technologies have moved on since 1904 – LED technology has been constantly evolving since it’s launch in the 50’s. One big advance was the release of filament LEDs, which means we’re now able to mimic the ever-popular vintage look of incandescent bulbs.

So really, what’s the difference between LED and Incandescent bulbs? Here are some compelling facts that will inspire you to make #TheBigLightSwitch by the time you reach the end of the page.

How long do LED bulbs last?

Old Edison bulbs last an average of 1,000 hours. That’s less than 1 year of residential use or about 2 months of commercial use². Our WattNott LED bulbs last an average of 25,000 hours – about 23 years of residential use, or 4 years of commercial use!

 

How much do LED bulbs cost?

Incandescent bulbs are unbelievably cheap to produce – a squirrel-cage bulb looks like a pretty good investment at C£5, compared to C£18 for one of our LED bulbs. But if one WattNott bulb outlives 25 incandescents, in the long run you’ll save C£107 on replacing dud bulbs. You know what they say – buy cheap, buy…. 25 times.

 

How energy efficient is LED lighting?

On average, our WattNott bulbs use 84% less energy than incandescent bulbs to produce the exact same lighting output³. So not only will you make savings on energy bills (C£6.50 per bulb per year in residential use and £25 per bulb per year in commercial use⁴)  but you’ll also lower your carbon footprint substantially⁵.

 

 What sort of light does an LED bulb create?

Both LEDs and incandescents can be dimmed to create a beautifully warm light – part of the reason they’re so popular. Our WattNott bulbs also come in clear or tinted glass so you can choose between a warm or super warm light. 

How long do LED bulbs take to light up?

Energy efficient bulbs have a bad rep for taking an age to light up. New LED technology means bulbs light up instantly, just like their incandescent counterparts. So no more feeling around in the dark waiting for your lightbulb to work.
