Thanks to everyone who voted for Plumen in the Home category of the Index Awards 2011. Sadly we didn’t win, but we were happy to take second place to a project of breathtaking ingenuity. Here are a couple of our favourite projects:
Elemental Monterrey (pictured above) provides social housing in an innovative new way. The project provides 70 basic houses with bathrooms, kitchens and staircases – leaving voids that can be expanded and personalised by residents as and when they can afford it. It’s a very worthy cause so congratulations to them for winning the Home category.
Adlens Universal and the Vision for a Nation Programme
Adlens Universal have created fluid-filled adjustable eyeglasses which allow the power of each lens to be adjusted independently to suit the needs of the user. Turning the adjuster knob pumps fluid into or out of the lens structure, which changes the lens power. The user can then simply seal the lenses and remove the adjusters when they’re done – which means no need for expensive eye care specialists.
As you may have noticed, the INDEX Awards are all about celebrating design which has the capacity to improve peoples’ lives worldwide. You can read more about INDEX here.
We always enjoy finding out about the different ways in which individuals use their PLUMEN bulbs – for example, we love the way the bulb works with the Graypants ’45 cardboard shade above.
If you have any beautiful photos of your PLUMEN, please share them with the world by posting them onto the wall of our Facebook page, here.
After some extra tweaks and certification delays, we’re thrilled to be crossing the pond with the PLUMEN 001 (110V).

We’re shocked, stunned and delighted to have received the overall award for the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2011, beating over 90 entries to claim the winning title.
Here it is on BBC News at 10.
Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum commented: “A worthy winner that is both beautiful and smart. It does away with the superfluous to achieve maximum economy of means. It’s a bulb that doesn’t need a shade and so goes a long way to make up for the loss of the Edison original.”
Stephen Bayley, 2011 Jury Chairsaid of the winning entry: “The Plumen light bulb is a good example of the ordinary thing done extraordinarily well, bringing a small measure of delight to an everyday product.”
Jury member Will Self added: “I don’t think any of the judges feel this is the dernier cri in terms of what will be done with the low-energy light bulb, but if you’ll forgive the pun – they are definitely a light leading the way. 2011 was not a year to reward high-end design devised purely for conceptual reasons or added-value results. We felt these bulbs were neat, appealing and covetable in the right, affordable way. Light is, of course, primary to design, without it there can be very little, if any.”
The Plumen 001 has been nominated for Product Design of the Year (and overall Design of the Year) by the Design Museum, London. The annual award nominates the best designs from around the world and divides them into 7 categories: Architecture, Fashion, Furniture, Graphics, Interactive, Product, and Transport. Here are some images of Plumen at the show on Flickr
The opening of the show was last week and there is a fantastic selection of work. We fans particularly of the Universal Gown, Intimate Rider and Plytube.
The whole show is fascinating and well worth a visit – go see it.
Category winners will be announced on Monday, the 28th Feb
Bayonet version of the bulb (220v) is here and available from the Plumen Shop
